The Price and Time of Eating Healthy and the Value of Planning

I wanted to spend a little time today to talk about the “price” we pay to eat right and healthy.  It’s a conversation that I have with friends, family members and my clients.  Everyone knows that Whole Foods is often referred to as “Whole Paycheck”  and that healthy foods like raw nuts, seeds and healthy oils aren’t cheap!  So when friends ask for advice about making some healthier swaps and eliminating things like Spenda, white sugar and other refined “garbage” from their diets there is often a bit of sticker shock that comes when I suggest things like Stevia, coconut sugar, dates, raw honey and real maple syrup.

I get it!  It’s not cheap! Eating clean and eating healthy can cost money!  I shop at different stores for different products.  I use Costco to buy things like maple syrup, honey, coconut oil, quinoa and some organic produce.  I shop at Whole Foods for their sales bulk bins, meat, fish and other speciality items.  I have staples at Trader Joes and I hit up a produce market and the farmers market at least once a week.  I also have things I buy Amazon and Vitacost. So on top of money there is a huge time piece as well!

I spend at least two hours on the weekend prepping food for the week so that lunch is easy and done!  I wake up at 5am to get my workouts in and to prep dinner so that when I get home at 5 I don’t have to stress about what to make!  What

However, the hours I spend shopping, prepping and yes making my own almond milk and turning the almond pulp into almond flour is worth it because it’s fun for me!  It’s a hobby and like exercising, it’s a hobby that betters my body!  The best part of the foodie in me is that my family and my friends get the “fruits of my labor.”

Cooking healthy and clean takes time, money, energy and some some prep.  It’s harder then going through the drive through or popping in a frozen pizza but boy does it taste that much better!  The bottom line is that cheaper is easier but it’s not better! Phrases like fat free and sugar free and “natural” should be examined closely!  Don’t be fooled by these easy words at the grocery store.  Take the time to eat and enjoy your food!  I am far from gourmet and am plenty busy with work, personal training but I always make the time to cook, shop and eat healthy!

    I am a healthy food shopper and a weekly food prepper.
    I tend to go to about 3-4 places weekly for my groceries & I shop the ads, since we are on a strict budget. We eat organic fruits & veggies when we can, but not always.
    When I do my food prep on Sunday, I try to make a few extra meals to freeze, so every 5-6 weeks or so, I get a break and only have to buy & prep snack foods {celery, carrots, hummus, etc}

    I completely agree. It’s not cheap but in the long run it’s so worth it to eat healthy. I usually make a run every other week to Sams for some of the bulk things but like to get my veggies from this farm that’s right down the road from work. Its cheaper than the grocery store and much better. I swear the green peppers are crispier. 🙂

    Yup, I’m with you- I shop at 3-4 grocery stores a week. It’s a pain, but totally worth the energy and price to get what I want. Otherwise, I have to settle, and I’m not about doing that! You’re not alone!
