I spent some time talking to others and doing some research about spirulina algae and here is what I found. Spirulina alga or blue – green algae are commonly found in marine or saltwater. Unlike other algae, the spirulina alga has a spiral shape that is similar to cyanobacteria. According to webmd.com, the blue-green algae are used as a source of dietary protein, B-vitamins, and iron. They are also used for weight loss, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), hayfever, diabetes, stress, fatigue, anxiety, depression, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and other women’s health issues. Spirulina is part of a plant-based food diet. It’s natural and can be considered part of whole food diet. If you are unsure, like I was, do some research. I find that reading up on things and talking to others, always helps me make informed decisions.
So, when I first opened my package of bits of was mortified with the smell. There was NO way I was going to chew the recommended does of 30 of these suckers! It smelled like a fishy pond! Plus, 30 seemed like a ton! So, I swallowed 15 of them. I’m nowhere near the height and size of your standard athelete, so I figured cutting the dose it 1/2 would be good and a good test run for me.
So, how did I feel? Well, I felt pretty darn AMAZING. I paced 5 miles at just over 8 minutes a mile. I was alert and at the end of the run I felt incredible! I’ve used the bits a few more times and each time I have felt amazing. On my weekend long run I swallowed 20 of them and felt fantastic for 8 blissful miles! I think 20 might be my magic number.
