Happy Monday my friends and happy LAST MONDAY of school to the Hubs and Sara. They will officially join me in summer vacation mode around Friday at 10am!
I’m linking up with Katie today because today and this past weekend was nothing but MARVELOUS!!
We had Sara’s birthday party of Saturday with her friends from school. I bought this shirt from her in Etsy because it’s her favorite saying! This was just the first of several birthday celebrations because everyone though your birthday is just 24 hours, in our family we like to make it last SEVERAL weeks 🙂
Sunday morning was RACE Day. I had some major race jitters. Perhaps it was because this was my first big race in over 2 years. I think that this was the 7th time that I’ve run the North Shore 1/2 Marathon. I love it. Although each year I remember how darn hilly it is!
Anyways, race weather was spectacular. Two years ago it was blazing hot when I ran the race in around 1:49 and the year before that in 2013 was cold, rainy and windy and somehow I ran the fastest race in my life around 1:39. My goal yesterday was 1:50.
In looking back at the previous years I realized that this race used to start at 6:50. Not sure why they made it later. I’d take 6:50 over 7:30 in June ANY DAY.
I started off strong through the first half but by mile 7 1/2-8 at the dreaded “mountain” I felt like I was losing steam. My thoughts immediately shifted back to the 2014 race when I had to walk a bunch because it was so hot. It was also just days later that we found out we were pregnant!
Anyways, the last 4 miles went relatively fast even though my pace way SLOWER. This is the mile by mile from my Garmin which was a bit off near several of the mile markers.
My splits were not even but I finished in 1:46:23 (8:07) pace!! I crushed my 1:50 goal and felt really good.
Here’s the thing though… I kept thinking all day, how on earth am I going to double that and do 26.2. YIKES. Marathon training kicks off today and I am excited and nervous.
Given my performance with the 1/2 marathon I think I am going to aim for the 8:30 pace groups for the long runs that I do with CARA.
I’ve got my family supporting me all of the way but once I start my new job in mid august the miles really pick up! It’s going to be hard balance!
I’m going to work hard this summer on focusing on the present and not thinking about next week or next month! I think staying mindful (something I am always WORKING on) might help with my training.
So for now I’m thinking about today and all of the exciting things that come with celebrating Sara’s birthday all week long and the last days of school.
Meanwhile B, has the right idea about summer!
Here’s to a great day and the start of marathon training!!
